JAN LAZAR JORDAN – GOLDEN HEART SENIOR CARE FEATURED CLIENT OF THE MONTH
They say great things come in small packages, which is absolutely true of this month’s Featured Client! Jan Lazar Jordan is physically very petite (as in extra-small petite), but in her energy she is a force of nature and we all just try to keep up!
Jan Lazar was born in Fargo, North Dakota on October 1st, 1934. Born to a Canadian father and American mother, Jan grew accustomed to life on the move, living in Spokane, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and eventually Arizona. At the age of six, she began her entry into the world of acting, which she eventually returned to following a successful, 30-year career in the hotel industry. A pioneer in her trade, she was the first female sales manager of a California hotel, when she accepted the position at the San Francisco Holiday Inn. Eventually, she managed the famous Ambassador hotel, where she worked the international press room during President Nixon’s vice presidency in the 1960s.
The list of distinguished people Jan worked with throughout her time at the Ambassador was numerous, including John and Robert Kennedy, Nikita Khrushchev, ROC President Lee, Germany Chancellor Adenauer, the Crown Prince/Princess of Japan, the King of Nepal, and the King and Queen of Denmark. However, political figures were not the only important people whose affairs Jan would oversee during her time spent in the hotel business. She also worked with many star professional athletes of her day, including Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain, Roger Maris, Mickey Mantle, Joe Garagiola and young Tommy Lasorda while he was still just a baseball scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
A seasoned traveler of the world, Jan and her husband were once granted the opportunity of a visit to the Mayor of Taipei, Lee Teng-hui, who eventually became the president of Taiwan and later, the Republic of China. On another visit, they met Mayor Sutherland in Australia.
It turned out that Jan’s knack for rubbing elbows with some of the most influential people of her era ran in the family. Her sister worked for NASA. Jan and her sister were able to take advantage of the opportunity to board both the Discovery and the Colombia, where they were introduced to John Glenn and Wally Schirra.
Following her retirement, Jan decided to revisit her earlier childhood passion: to give acting a try for 5 years. Jan became a sought-after Hollywood extra for 8 successful years – acting in over 100 movies, doing infomercials as well as commercials for Chevron and other companies.
Despite having lived through enough exciting experiences to last most people several lifetimes, the best for Jan was yet to come. She met the love of her life and soulmate, Richard Jordan, during his time working as a commercial pilot for Western and Delta airlines. After great times spent traveling, they eventually retired to Sun City West, Arizona, where their journey would intersect with that of Golden Heart Senior Care.
Jan has a very special place in our hearts. We first knew her as our “partner” several years ago, when we provided home care for her husband. We admire Jan beyond words for the love, devotion, and excellent care she provided to, and demanded for, her beloved Richard. Even as professionals, we learned much from her through observing the tenacity and intensity with which she managed every activity of his day. She fought for him to the finish, and her dedication to meet his every need is a testimony to unconditional love.
Sadly, Jan is now experiencing her own health issues and we are honored to be back in her home, providing care for this woman whom we so greatly admire. Jan’s Caregivers love to provide her the highest standard of care, and they know she will mentor them if they fall short. Most of all, we love to sit beside her and hear her countless stories of adventure and historical intrigue.
Some words Jan has always lived by is to “love thy neighbor as thyself,” and “treat others as you wish to be treated.” She believes in the power of positive energy, and that there is far too much negative energy in the world today – and she exhibits this belief every day.
Jan wishes to express her gratitude to Golden Heart for the loving compassion they have provided over the years for herself and Richard. Contributed by Daniel Trainor, CNA
