Feeling overwhelmed once in a while is an uncomfortable feeling, to be sure. Feeling overwhelmed all of the time is exhausting. If you’re feeling that way as a family caregiver, it’s time to find ways to get some calm back in your life.
Everyone pretty much follows this rule anyway, but most people don’t think about it. What are your priorities? What is most important for you to do every single day? As a caregiver, you might have to consciously think about your priorities more often than the average person, and that’s okay. It means that you’re keeping your goals and your priorities front and center so you can focus on them.
Be Realistic about What You Can Do
There’s only so much time in every day and there’s only so much energy in every caregiver. You can only do what you can do, so it’s time to be as realistic as possible about what that is. If you’re trying to cram way too much into every day, you’re going to feel overwhelmed and as if you’re failing. Don’t do that to yourself. Set yourself up for success by being realistic.
Plan Carefully and Then Follow the Plan
Set up a plan for every day that you carefully craft according to what has to happen that day. From there, you simply have to follow the plan. But a big caveat is that your plan isn’t always going to happen the way you want it to happen. Plan and follow the plan, but stay flexible to accommodate the “fires” that can crop up along the way.
Simplify as Much as You Can
As human beings we sometimes think that complicated or more options means that a situation is better. Reality proves to us over and over again, though, that the simpler a situation is, the better. Look at where your life, your home, and your schedule are complicated and figure out how you can simplify as much as you can. This might mean delegating tasks or even just decluttering a bunch of stuff that you don’t need.
Remember to be good to yourself. Being a caregiver isn’t about beating yourself up or wearing yourself out as much as you can. You need to have a life, too.
